Introduction Turkey has many natural beauties - wonderful beaches, waterfalls, lakes, rivers, rocky mountains, forests, dry land - and unique places like Istanbul, Cappadocia and Pamukkale. Cities with special architecture include Mardin, Urfa and Safranbolu, while ancient cities include Ephesus, Troy and Pergamon. The country offers locations and landscapes similar to some Mediterranean, Aegean, Arabic and North African countries, and it can be cheaper to shoot here than in these other countries. You can shoot spring, summer, autumn and winter scenes throughout the year. For example, you can shoot a skiing scene on a snowy mountain and then a swimming scene on the beach in the same day in Antalya for about 9 months of the year. There are luxurious hotels in every region and their prices are less than those in Europe. The technical equipment and transportation vehicles necessary to shoot a film nowadays are readily available and production crews are hard-working and experienced.Permits/visas Permits are required. Film makers/directors should apply to the Ministry of Culture & Tourism (Directorate General of Copyrights & Cinema) for film shooting permission, to the Turkish Embassies and Consulates abroad for work visas, and then to the Governership or the Directorate of Culture & Tourism of the cities where the film will be shot. The application form, which should be completed in English or Turkish by one representative, is available to download from the website - click the title “Yabancilarin Film Çekim Izni” under the main title “Basvurular”. According to Turkish law, it is obligatory to have at least one host/guide who is a citizen of the Turkish Republic during the film shooting. The host’s/guide’s address and telephone numbers must be stated. The documents should be faxed at least two weeks before the date of entry of the crew into Turkey and then the Turkish host/guide should contact the Ministry of Culture & Tourism to confirm that they have been received and to check whether anything further action is necessary. If everything is in order, the permission document will be provided by fax. Tax breaks/incentives Co-production support is available to Turkish and foreign producers who want to shoot in Turkey. Recent productions Films/TV programs shot in Turkey by foreign companies totalled 181 in 2006, 157 in 2007, and 49 in 2008 (between 1 January-23 April). |
