Gulf Film Festival at Dubai Festival City
The 6th Gulf Film Festival (GFF) takes place from 11-17 April, at Grand Cinemas, Dubai Festival City. The GFF is a celebration and review of the best in cinema from the Arabian peninsula and beyond, with an expanded industry programme and four competitions.
169 films will be screened from 43 countries, with all screenings free to the public. The schedule comprises 78 world premieres, 15 international premieres and 42 Middle East premieres.
The opening film is Wadjda, the first feature film shot entirely in Saudi Arabia by the country’s first female filmmaker, Haifaa Al-Mansour, who will be attending.
Apart from the competition segments, the GFF also hosts three Official Selection programmes: Lights, Intersections and Films for Children.
Festival director Masoud Amralla Al Ali remarked on the burgeoning industry: “While each country within the Gulf region shows an increase in activity, filmmaking in the UAE has skyrocketed in recent years. This attests to the number of training initiatives for nationals, as well as the many opportunities for our young people”.
