Tom Hanks and Tom Tykwer join forces again

German director Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run) is at the helm of a big screen adaptation of Dave Eggers’ novel A Hologram for the King, with Tom Hanks among the producers.

The feature is a co-production between X Filme Creative Pool in Berlin and Hanks’ production company, Playtone Productions, based in Santa Monica, USA.

X Filme told KFTV that the feature, in which Hanks will also star, is in the early stages of pre, pre-production, with financing and therefore locations still being locked down. But it is hoped shooting will be underway late this year, or early 2014.

X Filme also confirmed the main production personnel: Tykwer, who has written the screenplay, will also produce, alongside Stefan Arndt and Uwe Schott. The German producers are joined by Hanks and Gary Goetzman of Playtone.

A Hologram for the King follows a failing businessman who, desperate to keep his head above water and finally achieve something great, leaves the recession-hit US for a Saudi Arabian city.

Tykwer and X Filme have form when it comes to large-scale German/US co-productions, having worked with Andy and Lana Wachowski on the recent Cloud Atlas, also starring Hanks.
