Stallone, Schwarzenegger and Statham set off for Sofia
A super-stellar cast is boarding The Expendables 3, which shoots in Sofia, Bulgaria this summer. Sylvester Stallone stars alongside numerous Hollywood action A-listers including Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Jackie Chan, Mickey Rourke, Wesley Snipes and Dolph Lundgren.
According to various industry whispers, Mel Gibson may also be on the verge of signing up as the film’s baddie.
The Nu Image/Millennium Films feature will be based at Sofia’s Nu Boyana Studios later this summer, with shooting due to run for ten weeks from 19 August. The producers are Avi and Danny Lerner, Kevin King Templeton and Les Weldon. Patrick Hughes directs from a screenplay by Stallone and Richard Wenk.
The action adventure franchise has been a global box office hit since the original in 2010. Very much Stallone’s baby (he directed the first one and has had a hand in all three screenplays), the high-octane films centre on a group of elite mercenaries, led by Stallone’s character Barney Ross. The cast line-up consolidates the homage the movies pay to the huge-scale blockbuster films of the 80s and early 90s.
