Iranian director Mohsen Makhmalbaf, best known for Kandahar (2001), is to make his English language feature debut with The President.

The film centres on a dictator of a fictional country who is overthrown during a coup d’etat, a deposition which produces unexpected results as he disguises himself as a musician and gets to know the ‘real’ country and its people.

Filming will take place in the republic of Georgia in early 2014. F&ME’s Sam Taylor and Mike Downey are co-producing with Vladimer Katcharava of Tblisi-based 20 Steps and Herzog Filmproduktion’s Herzog Bruemmer.

Makhmalbaf has made over 20 feature films and won around 50 awards. He left Iran in 2005 following the election of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and now lives in Paris.
