Marion Cotillard joins Justin Kurzel's Macbeth
Marion Cotillard has replaced Natalie Portman in Justin Kurzel’s Macbeth, which is due to start filming in the UK in early 2014. The Dark Knight Rises actress has been cast as Lady Macbeth alongside the film’s star, Michael Fassbender, who is to play the Scottish king.
StudioCanal is co-financing the film with See-Saw Films and Film4, and will also handle distribution in the UK, France and Germany and international sales. See-Saw’s Iain Canning and Emile Sherman are producing the project.
Commenting on the film, StudioCanal chairman and CEO Olivier Courson said: “We are very pleased to be financing Macbeth which deftly brings contemporary themes to an iconic story. Justin Kurzel is a rare and distinct talent all of us at StudioCanal have admired for some
time and are happy to be able to accompany him in this film.”
See-Saw Films, based in the UK and Australia, has had a busy few years, with Oscar-winning The King’s Speech, Shame and the upcoming Slow West, also starring Michael Fassbender. The 36-year-old actor has been busy too – what with his role in Ridley Scott’s The Counselor alongside Javier Bardem and Brad Pitt, as well as several other projects he has in the pipeline.
