DreamWorks Studios have announced that American director Derek Cianfrance will direct their adaptation of M.L. Stedman’s international best-seller The Light Between Oceans. Cianfrance is probably best known for his work on Blue Valentine and The Place Beyond the Pines, both of which starred Ryan Gosling.

Stedman’s novel is set on a remote Australian island just after the end of the First World War, and centres on demobbed lighthouse keeper Tom Sherbourne and his new wife, whose seemingly idyllic and isolated paradise on Janus Rock is shattered by their inability to have children. Their lives change forever when one night a shipwrecked boat is washed up with a newborn baby and the body of a man on board.

UK-based David Heyman of Heyday Films (Gravity, Harry Potter etc) will produce along with Jeffrey Clifford.

DreamWorks’ production president Holly Bario said of the hire: “With his previous work, Derek has exhibited a deft touch when handling complex and emotional subject matter.”

“We have been ardent fans of Derek here at DreamWorks and were looking for a project on which we could collaborate,” added Stacey Snider, co-chair and CEO of DreamWorks Studios. “We certainly believe he can make a modern epic from M.L.’s poignant novel and will be able to capture the great epic sweep and emotional honestly of this story.”
