American network FX has ordered drama series Tyrant from Homeland creator Gideon Raff and Fox 21. Production gets underway in Tel Aviv from March 2014.

The plot centres on Bassam "Barry" Al Fayeed, the unassuming son of a dictator who has been living in the US for 20 years under self-imposed exile with his American wife and children. On returning to his Middle Eastern homeland, he becomes embroiled in political conflict and personal turmoil.

Raff will also serve as executive producer on the series - currently at least 10 episodes are in the pipeline -along with Howard Gordon and Craig Wright. Israeli-based Keshet Broadcasting are also involved as executive producers.

FX Networks president John Landgraf said of the commission: “Tyrant introduces characters and a world that have never been explored in a dramatic television series format. There is a reason a bidding war broke out over this project: it grabs you as all great epics do and simply refuses to let go.”

The pilot was filmed in Morocco earlier this year, directed by David Yates (State of Play, Harry Potter) and with British actor Adam Rayner in the lead role.
