Over the years, the Super Bowl has become one of the biggest sporting events in the world, with the 2011 broadcast becoming the most-watched US TV programme ever. It garnered an average of 111 million viewers.

No great surprise then that advertisers fall over themselves to book slots during the coverage with such a massive guaranteed audience. Their pockets must be deep though: a 30 second slot cost around $4m last year…

However, it’s not just the mammoth viewing figures that make this a unique opportunity for the brands. The commercials which premiere during the Super Bowl have become much-hyped and hotly-anticipated, often almost as talked-about as the game itself.

Indeed, some viewers reportedly watch the coverage just to see the ads, for which teasers and trailers are drip-fed to the public in the run-up to the event.

This year’s game, between the Denver Broncos and the Seattle Seahawks, will be held at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. True to form, some massive names are starting to appear in clips of the forthcoming ads, with one of the regular brands, Bud Light, securing A-listers Arnold Schwarzenegger and Don Cheadle to front its campaign, called Up For Whatever.
