BBCworldwide signs co-production deal with Spain for The Refugees

A brand new sci-fi show entitled The Refugees will be co-produced by BBCWorldwide (BBCWW) and Atresmedia in Spain. The deal is BBCWW’s first original co-production arrangement with a European broadcaster.

Filming of the English-language series, which will be broadcast on Spanish channel LaSexta, is set to begin in the summer. It will be produced by Bambú Producciones with BBCWW acting as co-producer. The commercial arm of the UK public broadcaster will also be responsible for the global distribution of the programme.

The Refugees (Refugiados) is currently scheduled to premiere on Spanish television sometime next autumn and has been created by Ramón Campos, Gema R Neira, Cristóbal Garrido and Adolfo Valor. The cast will be comprised of British actors.

In the drama series, a small rural community has to deal with millions of refugees from the future who have travelled back in time to seek shelter in the present.

BBCWW’s exec producer for international drama Ben Donald said the deal fits in with an emerging trend of European networks moving into English language drama, adding “we are now exploring this model to deliver cost-effective, high-quality output."

“The appeal of using British talent whilst growing our content pipeline by sourcing it from a new European partner really spoke to us. As did the opportunity to shoot an English speaking drama in Spain with a British cast and writer.”
