Budweiser Blackout from Anomaly Toronto
Timed to coincide with the Sochi Winter Olympics, the ad’s main conceit is a worldwide blackout during a crucial ice hockey game, with TV viewers seen around the globe in dismay as the all-important goal-signifying red lights are snuffed out.
In Canada, however – this spot is aimed at a home audience – we see the Budweiser red lights keep flashing and the sports fans going wild.
The ad actually premiered during the Super Bowl, but is now gathering momentum due to a tie-in campaign. Its accompanying marketing gimmick, a giant red blimp which flashes when a home team scores, can now be seen flying over various Canadian cities.
The spot is the latest in the brand’s Red Light series, one of which has already scooped a Silver Lion at Cannes.
