UK's Indian Summers to film on Malaysia's Penang Island

The drama series Indian Summers from the British shingle New Pictures will be filming on Penang Island in Malaysia from Monday 28 April.

The drama, which is made in collaboration with Malaysia’s Biscuit Films, will be the first international television production to be filmed entirely on location on the island.

The decision to film in Penang was made after an “extensive global search” for suitable locations. The series will be directed by Anand Tucker, who in 2010 directed the feature Leap Year with Amy Adams and Matthew Goode.

Produced for Channel 4, Indian Summers tells the story of Britain’s final years as the colonial ruler in India and is set between the Himalayas and tea plantations of northern India.

The series is being exec-produced by Charlie Pattinson, Rebecca Eaton and Simon Curtis.

A positive side-effect of the shoot is that certain heritage buildings on the island will be restored as part of the filming process.

"The producers will be working closely with us to create a sustainable filming infrastructure for returning future series as well as ensuring that the present filming locations will be safeguarded and properly maintained throughout the filming duration," Malaysia’s chief minister Lim Guan Eng said.
