Thailand shoot for award-winning director
Filming starts in Thailand in September on newly-titled Love in Khon Kaen from director Apichatpong Weerasethakul.
The film centres on a strange sleeping sickness which befalls 27 soldiers in a small town in Northern Thailand on the Mekon river. It is the director’s first feature since his Palme d’Or-winning Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives in 2010.
Weerasethakul, known for his dreamy, surreal style, directs from his own screenplay with Boonmee actress and regular collaborator Jenjira Widner attached to star.
Producers Simon Field and Keith Griffiths of UK-based Illuminations Films are behind the project, working alongside Thai production company Kick the Machine and German partners Match Factory Productions and Geissendoerfer film-& fernsehproduktion
The Thai Film Journal this week reported that the feature has received financial backing from the Berlin International Film Festival’s World Cinema Fund. The journal also carried a casting call, saying the project is to film in the director’s home town of Khon Kaen.
