Filming is underway in Massachusetts on Gus Van Sant’s Sea of Trees, starring Matthew McConaughey, Ken Watanabe and Naomi Watts.

Although the shoot will also take in Japan itself, where the story is set, filming has already started at Purgatory Chasm, Sutton, Massachusetts – doubling for the Aokigahara forest.

The forest actually lies at the northwest base of Mount Fuji, and is known as The Sea of Trees (or the Suicide Forest). It is renowned for its stillness and silence, and provides the backdrop for the drama which sees McConaughey as a suicidal widower heading to the historic site to kill himself.

The film, which is from Waypoint Entertainment and Netter Productions, is also said to be using Worcester and Foxboro, also both in Massachusetts.

The Academy Award-winning actor himself tweeted a picture of the first day of filming, just a few days ago.
