At the Locarno Film Festival this week, Switzerland announced it is to introduce a film production incentive and launched a new local film commission covering the south of the country.

Upcoming production incentive

The Swiss government will be introducing a 20% film production incentive on all relevant local spend – it is thought the incentive will come into force mid-2016. The final details of the rebate will be confirmed next year and are likely to also cover the costs of post-production.

With the incentive the government is aiming to increase both the level of Swiss as well as international productions (which would need to partner with a local production company to qualify for the rebate).

The Southern Switzerland Film Commission

A new film commission has opened its doors to local as well as international producers and filmmakers looking to shoot in the Ticino region.

The Southern Switzerland Film Commission will aim to facilitate and attract film shoots; offer personalised support with logistics, locations, crew and services; and render the Ticino area an attractive and competitive production location.

The organisation will be run by CEO Doris Longoni who previously worked as marketing director and account manager for Variety, where she was responsible for the partnerships with various international festivals.

Longoni also acted as a consultant for the international press office of the Odessa International Film Festival and supported the foundation of the Abu Dhabi Film Festival and promotion of the Abu Dhabi Film Commission.

Previously, 007 spy thriller Goldeneye used the Verzasca Dam in Ticino in its opening scene and the region’s beautiful landscapes are often used as the backdrop for documentaries, shorts and features.

The Southern Switzerland Film Commission was set up after a workgroup submitted a request to the Swiss government for funding and support. This group consisted of the AFAT (the Ticino Film and Audio-visual Association), the Swiss Italian group of independent directors and scriptwriters, the Ticino tourism office and the Locarno Film Festival.
