Roman Polanksi is returning to film but this time in front of the camera as he is among the stellar cast of Sicilian director and screenwriter Roberto Andò’s tenth feature, Le Confessioni (The Confessions).

Principal photography begins on 26 May in France before moving to Germany and Italy with an international cast including Italian Toni Servillo in the lead role (who also starred in Andò’s acclaimed Viva la Libertà); the award-winning French actor Daniel Auteuil; Danish actress Connie Nielsen and the French-Polish Polanski.

With the tagline, “Power seen through a monk’s eyes”, the feature is a co-production between Bi. Bi. Film in Italy, RAI Cinema and Barbary Film in France.

Although the content of the film is under wraps, it seems likely that it is based around the 13 books of Latin writing by St Augustine of Hippo, written between 397 and 400 AD. The canon covers Augustine’s conversion to Christianity following his sinful younger years, and is considered the first, and seminal, Western autobiography.

Le Confessioni has reportedly received over €550,000 from MIBACT, the Italian Ministry of Culture, as it is deemed a project of cultural interest.
