Historical romance Outlander is set to film scenes for its third season in South Africa next year, doubling the country for the Caribbean and using Cape Town as a base.

Historical romance Outlander is set to film scenes for its third season in South Africa next year, doubling the country for the Caribbean and using Cape Town as a base.
Outlander (pictured) follows a nurse living in 1940s Scotland who finds herself transported back in time to the mid-18th century where she meets and marries a clan warrior.
South Africa is the frequent filming location of choice for producers seeking visually suitable and cost-effective doubles for places like the Middle East and the American Mid-West.
Among the recent shoots to have visited South Africa have been ITV Studios’ Tutankhamun, which used remote rural locations as doubles for 1920s Egypt to tell the story of the search for the famous pharaoh’s tomb.
Outlander has been based at the adapted production facility Wardpark Studios in Cumbernauld near Glasgow for the past three series and is set to return there for Season Four.
The Scottish government wants to expand Wardpark as part of broader plans to build Scotland’s studio infrastructure. However, authorities are also under pressure to approve a privately-funded plan to build a new studio in Pentland near Edinburgh.
“The international market demand, and native screen industries, are desperate for a decision on the planning application for Pentland Studios – please support our industry and celebrate 2017 as the dawn of a new era in film and television for Scotland,” said the Association of Film and Television Practitioners Scotland, in a statement published in the Herald Scotland.
Scottish producers have long been calling for a purpose-built studio rather than an adapted facility.
