Disney has started filming a live-action version of Aladdin at Longcross Studios in the UK, with Guy Ritchie directing.

The film is based on Disney’s own 1992 animated film (pictured) that featured the late Robin Williams as the voice of the Genie. Will Smith will play the character in Ritchie’s new movie.

Aladdin is just the latest story to get the big-budget live-action movie treatment from Disney.

Tim Burton is also currently in production on Dumbo from a base at Pinewood Studios. Mary Poppins Returns filmed earlier this year at Shepperton Studios.

Bill Condon’s live-action version of Beauty and the Beast also shot in the UK and delivered $1.2bn at the global box-office for Disney in a dramatic showcase of audience appetites for new adaptations of the studio’s classic stories.

The UK’s filming incentive support, vast crew base and studio infrastructure make it one of the world’s leading production hubs.

Disney is filming most of its new projects in the UK. Jon Favreau’s recent remake of The Jungle Book was a high-profile exception that used Los Angeles as a base and a new version of The Lion King, made using the same visual-effects-heavy style, is also filming in LA.
