Producers of 'Nordic noir' drama Last Rituals are planning to film scenes in Iceland next year as an Iceland-Canada co-production.

The show is based on a series of dark crime novels by Icelandic author Yrsa Sigurdardottir featuring detective Thora Gudmundsdottir.

Location filming will likely take place in Iceland, with interiors and post-production work to be done in Canada, Screen reports.

“This will be a book adaptation set and produced in Iceland in the English language,” said Joni Sighvatsson, of Scandinavian distributor Scanbox.

“There’s not been a female-driven, worldwide hit Scandinavian crime story in some time. We think this material is quite unique. It’s a procedural with a much more humanistic element.”

Iceland appears regularly in big-budget Hollywood productions, although international producers tend to film there for relatively short spaces of time. Recent high-profile projects have included superhero movie Justice League and the action sequel Fast & Furious 8.
