Principal photography begins in the UK next week on Netflix’ The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.

The reboot of the cult 1982 film features a cast of puppets created by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop and Brian Froud, the original feature’s conceptual designer.

Director Louis Leterrier (pictured) will call the shots from scripts by lead writers Jeffrey Addiss, Will Matthews and Javier Grillo-Marxuach.

Netflix’ footprint in the UK continues to grow with both original commissions and co-production projects. Currently filming in Scotland is Outlaw King with Chris Pine, Wanderlust with Toni Collette and Harlan Coben’s drama Safe, with several development projects lined up.

The streaming giant recently announced plans to spend up to $8bn on content in 2018 including a planned 80 films - an increase on the $6bn figure mooted for this year.

Recent new commissions in other Netflix territories include a school-set drama in Italy, a film about the Pope to shoot in Argentina starring Anthony Hopkins and the India-set Bard of Blood.
