Period adventure series Warrior is filming in South Africa to tell a story based on an idea from the late martial arts icon Bruce Lee.

The drama is set in San Francisco in the second half of the 19th century and follows a young martial arts prodigy who travels to the city from China only to become embroiled in violent clashes between rival Chinese crime families.

Shannon Lee, daughter of the late Bruce, is an executive producer on the series through Bruce Lee Entertainment.

“As a show that proudly bears the imprimatur of Bruce Lee, it’s our intention to deliver not only explosive martial arts action – which we will – but also a powerful and complex immigration drama that is as relevant today as it was in the 1870s,” said Jonathan Tropper, the series’ creator and executive producer, when the drama was formally announced over the summer.

Cape Town is a hugely popular southern hemisphere filming location and has sunny coastal locations that are sometimes used as US settings.

San Francisco itself can be a challenging filming location. The city lacks studio infrastructure and Vancouver is frequently used as a stand-in.

However, since California’s tax credit support was boosted, San Francisco has seen its production profile rise and Transformers spinoff Bumblebee has been a high-profile recent visitor to the city.
