Marvel’s ‘antihero’ comic book movie Venom, starring Tom Hardy and directed by Ruben Fleischer, will reportedly film scenes on location in San Francisco.

Production will take place over a period of about ten days until the end of next week, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Marvel has shot scenes for its movies in San Francisco before, most notably for Ant-Man, which like Venom is set in the Californian city.

However, few big-budget productions spend much time in San Francisco due to limited incentive support and a lack of studio infrastructure.

Ant-Man was based at Pinewood Atlanta Studios in Georgia, which is also a key location for Venom.

The Venom character was originally written for Marvel as an alien life form that attaches itself to Spider-Man and drives him to make darker choices as a character. Filmmaker Sam Raimi in fact used the character as a story villain in Spider-Man 3 back in 2007.

While Spider-Man has now been moved back into the Marvel Cinematic Universe following an agreement between Sony and Marvel, Fleischer’s Venom film is being made as a standalone movie.

The Venom shoot could help boost San Francisco’s production profile. In the last few months Transformers spinoff film Bumblebee has also shot in the city, indicating that the Hollywood studios are taking a greater interest in the area despite the production limitations.
