A new film studio complex is to be developed in Abu Dhabi to help boost the city’s international production appeal.

Twofour54’s Studio City at Mina Zayed will offer studios spanning up to 43,000 sq ft, an exterior film set, a permanent back lot and smaller productions spaces catering for local shoots.

The entire facility will cover some 3.2m sq ft and will increase twofour54’s capacity by 30% by 2020.

“This is an important milestone for Abu Dhabi and the development of the film and TV industry in the region,” said HE Maryam Eid AlMheiri, CEO of Media Zone Authority.

“Since twofour54 was established almost a decade ago, we have strived to become the capital of quality content creation and to contribute to Abu Dhabi’s economic diversification strategy.

“Today, Abu Dhabi is a filming destination that has attracted some of the largest studios in the world, such as Disney with Star Wars (pictured) and Universal Pictures with the Fast & Furious franchise, as well as blockbusters from Bollywood such as Dishoom, Tiger Zinda Hai, Baby and Bang Bang.”

Abu Dhabi is a Middle Eastern production hub and has an edge over nearby Dubai with a 30% filming incentive. Disney and Lucasfilm used Abu Dhabi as a stand-in for a desert planet in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and action sequel Fast & Furious 7 used the city as a key filming location.

International features tend to use Abu Dhabi for its locations rather than for its production infrastructure, but Studio City could help further boost the region’s profile.
