A second series of Sky Atlantic’s historical fantasy Britannia is currently in prep and will shift its main filming location to the UK.

Co-produced by Vertigo Films and written by Jez Butterworth and Tom Butterworth, the first series used sets built near Prague in the Czech Republic to tell a story of the Romans attempting to establish themselves in Britain in the first century AD.

“The first series of Britannia brought Jez’s unique vision to life,” said Cameron Roach, commissioning editor for drama at Sky, when the second series commission was first announced.

“The series is a tale of clashing faith systems, torn apart families, mystic men and fearsome queens, all told with humour, heart, epic drama and violence.”

Limited scenes from the first series were filmed in the UK but the Czech Republic was eventually chosen partly as a cost-saving exercise.

Britannia lost viewers for its weekly broadcast slots over the course of its run, but had greater success with its on-demand audience. The series has since sold to more than 200 territories.
