We’ve introduced tools such as the Production Card – a
secure alternative to handling cash on a production – and
our Digital Purchase Order system, which has increased the
efficiency of the purchase order workflow.
We are set up to help clients at every stage of the production
process, from pre-production through to managing royalties
and residuals at the end.
Award-winning entertainment industry payroll, accounting and software provider
Sargent-Disc provides a comprehensive range of services to the production industries.
and how to
control them
W
ith its affiliates, Entertainment
Partners (EP) in the US, it offers
a global network, throughout
Europe, the US, Canada and Asia, to
help deliver national and international
productions cost-effectively and efficiently.
Sargent-Disc’s client base includes
Hollywood studios, broadcasters,
independent film and TV producers and
a range of corporate clients within the
entertainment industry.
Explaining the company’s offer, director
Laurence Sargent says: “We are set up to
help clients at every stage of the production
process from pre-production through to
managing royalties and residuals at the
end. By helping our clients control and
monitor costs at every stage of the process,
it means they are able to put more of their
budget in places they really want to.”
Sargent-Disc’s core business is a payroll
system tailored to interface with the
client’s production accounting software,
says Sargent. “It is designed so that you
can pay artists and crew throughout
the world in a range of currencies. It’s
integrated, so it can also handle the burden
of residuals and royalties.”
At the heart of the payroll system is a secure
online portal called SD Online. Accessible
across a range of platforms it allows clients
to track payments on a 24/7 basis: “The
beauty of SD Online is that it is easy and
efficient,” says Sargent, “Aside from allowing
clients to keep track of their expenditure in
real-time, it is HMRC compliant, which means
it is easy for them to fulfil the necessary
requirements to qualify for tax credits. There
is also an auto-enrolment solution built in, so
we can manage pension requirements and
contributions for clients.”
Sargent-Disc’s clients and credits read
like a who’s who of the entertainment
industry, with Warner Brothers, 20th
Century Fox, Pinewood Studios, Carnival
Films and Channel 4 just a few of those
to have used the company’s solutions.
Channel 4, for example, is benefitting from
a clear workflow of information between
all Channel 4 finance and talent systems
resulting in more accurate reporting.
“Channel 4 have enjoyed working with
Sargent-Disc from the start,” says Jane
Edison, the project manager who oversaw
the introduction of Sargent-Disc’s
solutions: “They have a great work ethic,
are great to work with and provide us with a
great service and value.”
In addition to its production payroll
capability, Sargent-Disc handles corporate
payroll and has broad expertise in
production accounting and services. The
company’s affiliation with Entertainment
Partners means it is European distributor of
popular software packages such as Movie
Magic Budgeting, Movie Magic Scheduling
and Vista Accounting. “Vista is a very
flexible hosted service that allows the
client to import multiple budgets and report
across productions,” explains Sargent. “It
allows you to work with multiple currencies,
companies and locations, making it perfect
for international co-productions.”
Founded in 1986, Sargent-Disc is a family-
run firm committed to excellent service,
says Sargent.
But it also takes innovation very seriously,
which is one reason it was named
Specialist Payroll provider of the year at
the 2014 National Payroll World Awards:
“We’ve introduced tools such as the
Production Card – a secure alternative
to handling cash on production,” he says,
“and our Digital Purchase Order system has
increased the efficiency of the purchase
order workflow. A lot of our innovations
help to get rid of the mountain of paper
producers often struggle with.”
Based at Pinewood Studios, the company
takes great pride in its close ties with the
industry: “We attend major industry events
and are an official partner of BAFTA, The
Production Guild, UK Screen and Women
in Film and TV UK,” says Sargent. “Our
close relationship with the industry is a key
reason we are able to ensure our products
and services meet their changing needs.”
