French production company Haut et Court (Les Revenants) and UK based Warp Films are collaborating on Barbarians, a drama series set to shoot from early 2014.

Jerome Pierrat, Jean-Alain Laban and Jack Thorne are writing the script, based on real events, which centres on the jewellery-stealing crime gang which was 'established' following the Balkans war.

Known as the Pink Panthers, the presumed-to-be Yugoslavian gang includes hundreds of people, including ex-soldiers, who cut a swathe across Europe as they carry out audacious high profile jewel thefts, and occasionally traffick weapons and drugs.

The 6 x 60 drama is made in association with Canal+ and Sky Atlantic, and is likely to shoot in Belgium, France and Serbia.

Currently a documentary entitled Smash & Grab: The Story of the Pink Panthers is doing the festival rounds before being released in Europe and the US in July 2013. Directed by Havana Marking (director of award-winning 2009 documentary Afghan Star) the film features five Pink Panther members who each share bits about their roles in the syndicate.
