Mauritius tax scheme launched

Mauritius has launched a new film rebate scheme allowing for a 30% refund on all the qualifying production expenditures incurred by international film producers working on projects on the island.

The scheme was officially launched earlier this week with an aim to develop further the creative arts industry. The Mauritian government ultimately wants to attract film shooting and post-production activities on Mauritius.

At the launch of the scheme, the vice prime minister Xavier-Luc Duval, who orchestrated the new scheme, highlighted the size and importance of the film industry and its business potential for the island. He said he expects the film industry to generate around MUR 500m in 2014 and bring in about MUR 1bn annually in foreign exchange.

This scheme puts Mauritius at-par with other shooting locations with a similar appeal such as Malaysia and Abu Dhabi, both which also offer a 30% rebate.

According to the Board of Investment - which looks after the execution of the scheme - some five large production companies from the UK, India and the local region are waiting for the scheme to come into force so they can take their production to Mauritius.

The board says it has also recorded some interest from local producers as well as production houses from China, South Africa and India.

The government hopes that the industry will provide great exposure and visibility to the Mauritian tourism industry in various source markets such as India, China and Europe.
