In February we reported that Alberta, Canada, was aiming to increase its film and TV production with the construction of a new state-of-the-art film studio. The location for this new studio has now been confirmed as Calgary by local government officials.

The Calgary Film Centre will be built on an 8-acre site and is scheduled to cost around $23m – at the time of the first announcement the studio was expected to open its doors in the summer of 2015.

Funding for the project comes from the province ($5m), the city ($10m) and Calgary Economic Development ($6.8m).

The Centre will feature two sound stages of 20,000 and 30,000 sq ft each, plus 18,000 sq ft of warehouse space and up to 15,000 sq ft more for the creation and storage of props, sets and wardrobes.

Calgary’s Mayor, Naheed Nenshi, said having a film studio in Calgary is critical to maintaining and growing the local media industry.

Despite tough competition from British Columbia and Ontario, Alberta has managed to attract some large productions in recent years. Multiple Oscar-winner Brokeback Mountain, feature film Inception and TV series Fargo shot in Alberta - currently it is the home of hit series Heartland.
