A TV pilot based on classic horror story The Exorcist will film on location in Chicago from next week.

The Exorcist (pictured) was originally released in 1973, adapted from the novel by William Peter Blatty, and quickly became a classic of the horror genre. It tells the story of a teenage girl apparently possessed by a demon and the two priests who attempt an exorcism.

Four movie prequels and sequels to The Exorcist have since been released and in recent years horror audiences have shown a renewed appetite for cinematic tales of demonic possession.

Illinois officially offers a 30% tax credit as a filming incentive on qualifying production expenditure in the state. However, for much of last year tax credit payments were deferred while state authorities addressed wider budget problems, creating an uncertain situation for film and TV producers.

Despite this, Chicago remains a popular filming location, particularly for television. In recent years the city has hosted ratings hit Empire, while high-profile producer Dick Wolf has set up Chicago Fire as a successful drama series in the city. This has led to spinoff shows Chicago P.D. and Chicago Med.

Cinespace Chicago Film Studios is the city’s main production facility and will host the pilot shoot for The Exorcist.
