Superhero movie Aquaman, based on the DC comic book character, has started filming in Queensland, Australia.

The Warner Bros. Pictures production will use all nine sound stages at Village Roadshow Studios near Gold Coast, including a AU$16m, 40,000-sq-ft facility that was fast-tracked for opening last year to host Marvel’s superhero movie Thor: Ragnarok.

Aquaman was first announced for Queensland in December and is scheduled to spend more than AU$100m on physical production in the area.

Queensland’s studio facilities make it one of Australia’s top regional filming locations for big-budget Hollywood shoots.

Warner Bros. has also confirmed that additional location filming has been scheduled for Newfoundland, Sicily and Tunisia.

Aquaman stars Jason Momoa, who made his first appearance as the character in a fleeting cameo in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, a movie that filmed mainly in Detroit. He will appear again later this year in the superhero ensemble Justice League, which saw Warner Bros. switch filming locations to the UK.
