Based on William Makepeace Thackery’s 1840s publications, the story follows heroine Becky Sharp as she fights her way to prosperity against the backdrop of the Napoleonic Wars.

Budapest is a hugely popular Eastern European filming hub and offers producers a base 25% tax credit.

The city has attracted high-profile productions for years, including three recent Ridley Scott shoots. The filmmaker directed sci-fi survival movie The Martian at Korda Studios and has been involved as a producer on Blade Runner 2049 and TV anthology series The Terror.

Vanity Fair was last adapted as a feature in 2004 by director Mira Nair with Reese Witherspoon as Becky Sharp, a version that was also filmed largely in the UK.
