The annual fund for California’s filming incentive should be expanded to at least $500m, according to the mayor of Los Angeles.
California currently offers $330m a year in filming tax credits, but the support programme favours TV series and the state is still having trouble securing big-budget feature production.

“When the legislature comes back to this issue, we should be going to $500m or more – maybe even no limit,” said Eric Garcetti, the mayor of Los Angeles, in comments reported by Variety.
“A studio head was saying to me yesterday that it’s too darn hard to get that credit, so we need to take this moment and bring productions back.”
California has recently allocated large tax credit payments to Bradley Cooper’s directorial debut A Star Is Born and Ava DuVernay’s A Wrinkle in Time, while Transformers spinoff Bumblebee is also reportedly filming entirely in the state with considerable incentive support.
However, most big-budget features still prefer to film in Georgia, the UK or Canada. Boosting California’s tax credit would help Los Angeles compete with the rest of the world.
