California is the top filming location for US TV pilots, hosting nearly three times that of its closest competitor New York over the past year.
Los Angeles hosted 68 separate projects – compared to 24 in New York – and comedy pilots dominated, suggesting that LA’s studio facilities may have been a decisive factor in California’s national appeal.

American TV networks produced far fewer pilots overall, while the number of straight-to-series commissions increased.
“Despite this year’s smaller crop of pilots, Los Angeles’ television industry is robust,” said Paul Audley, president of FilmLA. “With so many projects under way, California is home to more scripted series than its top five competitors combined.”
There are currently 62 TV series filming in Los Angeles, half of which receive California’s tax credit support, according to FilmLA.
Drama series Timeless is set to relocate to LA from Vancouver with tax credit support of just under $10m, while Lucifer and Legion are also moving from Canada to California.
