Streaming giant Amazon will boost its production spending in 2018, which follows a similar announcement from Netflix.

“I just want to be clear: we’re going to continue to invest in video and increase that investment in 2018,” said Brian Oslavsky, Amazon’s chief financial officer, in comments to industry analysts reported by Broadcast.

“The video business is having great results with our most important customer base, which is our Prime customer.”

Amazon’s third-quarter net sales increased 34% on the same period last year, reaching $43.7bn.

Major Amazon productions have included alternate-reality drama series The Man in the High Castle and TV adaptations of the Neil Gaiman stories American Gods (pictured) and the upcoming Good Omens.

Netflix has announced it will be spending between $7bn and $8bn on content in 2018, up from the planned $6bn from this year.
