Victoria in Australia

Russell Crowe is set to film in Victoria, Australia, for a new movie about infamous 19th century ‘bushranger’ and outlaw Ned Kelly and his gang.

The True Story of the Kelly Gang is being adapted from Peter Carey’s award-winning novel and is described as a “gothic western”. Justin Kurzel is set to direct the film.

The film has investment from Screen Australia, in association with Film Victoria and Film4. George MacKay, Nicholas Hoult and Essie Davis will co-star with Crowe.

Victoria has recently hosted the feature film Winchester, telling the US-set story of the troubled heiress of the Winchester Arms fortune. The final season of US drama The Leftovers also shot in the state.

Docklands Studios Melbourne is Victoria’s main studio. The facility reported a “production boom” earlier this year, with all five of its stages in use hosting shoots that were generating nearly AU$20m for the provincial economy.
