Kevin Costner’s upcoming modern western TV drama Yellowstone is filming on “fully-functional” sets built at Utah Film Studios.
The series is being directed by Taylor Sheridan (pictured) and stars Costner as the patriarch of a family that runs the largest contiguous – or unbroken – stretch of ranch land in America.

“All the logs for the sets are real and we imported them from Montana,” said Perri Eppie, the show’s publicity co-ordinator, in comments to regional news outlet the Park Record.
“The sets are also fully functional with water and stoves. They are built up on a higher base so we can install real plumbing. So when John Dutton, Kevin Costner's character, washes his hands, real heated water comes out.”
Building fully-functional sets will add to the verisimilitude of the drama and also allows more flexibility for Sheridan’s final shot list.
The Yellowstone production team is spending around $28m in Utah over the course of the shoot, although Virginia Pearce, director of the Utah Film Commission, says this figure does not include ancillary expenses.
“What the $28m doesn't account for is the money that the out-of-state crews are spending on food at local restaurants, hotels, car rentals, local dry-cleaners, building materials from Home Depot and other expenses,” Pearce told the Park Record.
Utah offers a base 20% filming incentive, which was a major factor in the decision to base Yellowstone in the western state.
