New Zealand had an international filming boost of nearly 20% in 2017, with most overseas production, including post work, coming from North America.
Gross production revenue from foreign projects reached nearly NZ$800m for the year, with North American titles responsible for 80% of that figure, whether through filming or post-production.

Capital Wellington remained New Zealand’s movie production hub, generating more than half (55%) of the country’s overall filmmaking revenue in the category, but Auckland’s share rose over the course of the year.
“In 2017, Wellington-based production and post-production companies contributed to the making of Ghost in the Shell, Thor: Ragnarok, Blade Runner 2049, Justice League and War for the Planet of the Apes, while Mortal Engines was shot in Wellington,” said Laura O’Leary of Stats NZ.
This time last year, New Zealand reaffirmed its commitment to its national filming incentive programme with a fund of NZ$240m over four years.
Recent high-profile productions filmed in New Zealand have included Disney’s fantasy movie A Wrinkle in Time, while Tom Cruise shot a daring helicopter chase sequence for his action sequel Mission: Impossible – Fallout.
