Los Angeles saw a 5% increase in overall location filming in the fourth quarter of last year, contributing to a 1.5% rise for 2018.

The two largest increases were in the TV pilot and feature film categories, which saw location filming days for the quarter rise by 15.2% and 12.2%, respectively, according to the figures from FilmLA.

California is attracting more big-budget features and TV dramas through an expanded filming incentive programme, but in this instance only a fraction (11.4%) of location days recorded for features received incentive support. The figure was only a few points higher for TV dramas (15.3%).

Superhero film Captain Marvel has been one of the highest-profile films to shoot in California in the past year. In December, the movie’s supervising location manager Ilt Jones and his team were recognised for their work on the film at the California On Location Awards.

Also recognised was the Netflix movie Bird Box, which shot in and around Los Angeles and has been claimed as a hit by the streaming giant since its late-December launch.
