Apple series Midnight Family gets underway in Mexico

The medical drama is the streaming platform's first entirely Spanish-language project.

Apple TV+ drama, Midnight Family, has started filming in Mexico City.

Fabula's Pablo and Juan de Dios Larraín (Spencer) will produce the series based on the award-winning documentary, Familia de Medianoche, alongside Fremantle. Natalia Beristáin will serve as showrunner and director on the 10-episode medical drama.

Midnight Family follows Marigaby Tamayo (Vaca), an ambitious and gifted medical student by day, who spends her nights saving lives throughout a sprawling, contrasted and fascinating Mexico City aboard her family's privately-owned ambulance. Along with her father Ramón (Cosío) and her siblings Marcus (Calva) and Julito (Bautista), Marigaby serves a population of millions by tackling extreme medical emergencies to make a living.

The cast includes Joaquín Cosío (Narcos: Mexico, Suicide Squad 2), Renata Vaca, Diego Calva (Narcos: Mexico), Yalitza Aparicio (Roma), Itzan Escamilla (Élite), José María de Tavira, Óscar Jaenada, Dolores Heredia (El Chapo), Mariana Gómez and Sergio Bautista.

The series was developed by Gibrán Portela and Julio Rojas, and written by Portela.  Angela Poblete and Mariane Hartard will also exec produce, with Peter Blake (The Good Doctor, House) to serve as consulting producer.
