Turner Construction Company is set to develop a brand-new 1.5 million sq. ft. film and television studio on the waterfront in Bayonne, New Jersey.

After receiving financial backing from Togus Urban Renewal, the construction company will convert a 60-acre waterfront site into a major filming facility.

Named 1888 Studios - as homage to the year the motion picture camera was invented - the 17-building campus will include soundstages, support/office spaces and workshop/mill buildings in which the stage sets will be constructed and stored.

2,000 construction workers are expected to contribute to building the studio, which will have approximately 2,000-3,000 full-time employees working in the studio following completion.

Environmental sustainability will be built into the development and the site will be elevated to address potential flooding now and in the future given its water front proximity.

“We are extremely excited to be part of the team that will transform this long under-utilised waterfront site in Bayonne. In addition to the positive economic benefit of the project for the community, I look forward to viewing the creative work that will be produced in these groundbreaking facilities, said Larry Boresen, VP and general manager of Turner Construction Company.

He addded, “It will also be great to see members of the community having access to a revitalised waterfront park and promenade that will be part of the campus.”

Construction is expected to begin in early 2023.
