Overview and recent productions

A 25% cash rebate from Business Finland for qualifying production costs in the country is available to features, documentaries, animation and scripted TV drama. The incentive is capped at $12.9m (€10.6m) for 2021, up from $12m (€10m) in previous years.

In addition to the national incentive, there are six regional incentives in Finland, including a newly introduced one in Kotka (southeast). Finland’s international appeal continues to grow, as evidenced by XYZ Films’ alliance with Film Tampere. In late 2020, XYZ shot its sci-fi feature Dual, starring Aaron Paul and Karen Gillan, in the area.

Further recent shoots include TV series White Wall, a Sweden-Finland co-production that shot in northern Finland. Finnish filmmakers have also been taking a special interest in sustainable production, including Aku Louhimies’ carbon-netural shoot for The Wait.

Finnish crews speak good English (the cash rebate application can be completed in English) and Finland can accommodate about four to seven productions simultaneously. Leading local production service companies include Film Service Finland, Warner Finland, Helsinki-filmi, Fisher King, MRP Matila & Röhr, Grilli Films and Woodpecker.

Infrastructure and crews

Finland has a small but respected film industry. Experienced crews are available,as well as good production services and filming equipment. The country is yet to develop world-class studio facilities but international producers come to Finland primarily for its unique filming locations.

Locations range from Finland’s famous lakes (more than 187,000 of them) to Cold War looks or urban chic in parts of Helsinki, and the snowy climes of Lapland.
