Acclaimed auteur Ken Loach is working on Jimmy’s Hall, with an eye to shooting in Ireland in late summer. As with many of his projects, details of the nature of the film are somewhat under wraps.
It is thought to centre on the Irish communist leader James Gralton who used the cover of a dance hall he set up in County Leitrim to broadcast his political views. In 1933, following opposition from the Catholic church, he became the only Irishman to be deported to the US.
Loach is once again teaming up with writer Paul Laverty and producer Rebecca O’Brien, who are based at Sixteen Films in London. The triumvirate have worked together many times in the past, on projects such as The Angels’ Share (2012) and Palme d’Or winner The Wind That Shakes the Barley (2009).
Element Films and the Irish Film Board are among the backers of Jimmy’s Hall, with Wild Bunch on board for sales.
