Ang Lee backs culture ministry's documentary subsidy plan
Oscar-winning Taiwanese director Ang Lee has added his weight behind Taiwan's ministry of culture's plan to increase its subsidies for documentary filmmaking.

Oscar-winning Taiwanese director Ang Lee has added his weight behind Taiwan's ministry of culture's plan to increase its subsidies for documentary filmmaking.
At a press conference in Taipei attended by culture minister Lung Ying-tai and Lee, the director is reported to have said: "The government's encouragement, as well as the support and understanding of audiences, is definitely needed".
The director also urged that documentary films should not be limited to movie theatres, and should be shown more on TV and new media channels.
Announcing the subsidies at the press conference, Ying-tai said the ministry plans to spend NT$500m (nearly £11m) over the next five years to subsidise local documentary projects. It is hoped this will give greater exposure to Taiwanese documentaries across the globe.
