Veteran star of the big screen Sir Anthony Hopkins is to play Freddy Heineken, the brewing magnate who was kidnapped in 1983.

One of the richest men in the world at the time, Heineken was snatched in an audacious operation by a Dutch gang which included Willem Holleeder and Cor van Hout. The ransom was one of the largest ever paid for a kidnap victim: 35m Dutch guilders, around 16m euros. Most of the ransom money was never found and it is said that after the gang divided the cash, they never again met up together as a group.

The producers are Michael Simpson and Judy Cairo of Informant Media.

Most of the will shoot will take place in Amsterdam, with principal photography due to start in the autumn.

Daniel Alfredson (The Girl Who Played with Fire, Echoes from the Dead) directs from a screenplay by William Brookfield. The script is based on the book by Dutch journalist Peter R de Vries, The Kidnapping of Alfred Heineken.
