“The word is out…” tweeted the Dutch Black Book actress Carice van Houten on Monday (May 20), responding to news that she will produce, and take the lead in, a new biopic about one of the most glamorous film stars of the 20th century: Greta Garbo.

Van Houten (Black Book, Game of Thrones) will play Garbo in the rags to riches story of Sweden’s most famous ever movie star. Garbo, one of MGM’s greatest actresses, was one of the few who continued her career when the industry shifted from silent films to talkies.

The beauty icon suddenly broke away from the world of film in 1941 when she was at the height of her career and withdrew from the public eye. She died in New York in 1990 when she was 84 years old. Not much is known about her decision to retire at an early age.

The script for the film is reportedly being written by Soni Jorgensen, a Swedish screenwriter who is based in LA. Aside from Van Houten, the film will be produced by Helena Danielsson of Swedish production company Hepp Film.

The screenplay is said to be ready for autumn, however it is still unknown when shooting will commence.

Van Houten, who already told media last year she would love to one day play the Swedish diva, has been in touch with Garbo’s estate to clear the rights.
