Launch of epic Scandinavian Viking drama
International best seller The Long Ships is to be turned into a major TV drama. Considered the most ambitious Scandinavian drama to date, production will start in 2015 with a budget of up to €13m.
Originally published in two parts from 1941 to 1945, the adventure novel by Swedish author Frans Gunnar Bengtsson recounts the legend of 10th century hero Red Orm, whose journey changes history.
Peter Aalbaek Jensen and Sisse Graum Jorgensen will produce for Zentropa, with Lone Korslund on board for Nordisk. The executive producer is Nordisk’s Lone Cross Lund. Negotiations are ongoing regarding director and screenwriter, with financing being sought.
There have been attempts in the past to film the epic adventure, which is loosely based on the Icelandic saga, but Aalbaek Jensen said of this co-production: "Many have tried - we will succeed!"
