Disney’s Golden Oak Ranch in Santa Clarita, California, is set to expand after Los Angeles County Supervisors approved a plan which could bring thousands of jobs and millions of dollars to the local economy.

The ranch is in Placerita Canyon, less than an hour north of LA, and already comprises 890 acres that serve as a filming location and backlot. Disney is reportedly planning to redevelop 58 acres of it as a new film and TV production studio called Disney/ABC Studios at the Ranch, which will include new production offices and sound stages.

The supervisors who voted on the plans have granted permission for two different versions: one allowing Disney and ABC Studios to erect 12 sound stages, and one to build eight, with varying amounts of square feet for expansion allocated accordingly. There are still several procedures and approvals needed from other bodies and agencies before the final go-ahead for the build.

Santa Clarita Mayor Bob Kellar said: “We need to do more to keep film production activity in the state, and approval of the project is a step in the right direction”, while Don Fleming, co-chairman of the Santa Clarita Valley Economic Development Corporation added “The county needs to do all it can to keep the entertainment industry in Los Angeles County with investments such as this.”
