The city of Detroit and the wider Michigan area will be the premier locations for the upcoming Superman/Batman film, it was announced on Thursday (29 Aug).
It was the Michigan Film Office who announced via their website that the next DC Entertainment superhero movie from Warner Bros. Pictures had been approved for a film incentive from the state.
Production on the new film by director Zack Snyder is expected to begin sometime in the first quarter of 2014.
Commenting on the decision to shoot in Michigan, Snyder said: “Detroit is a great example of a quintessential American city, and I know it will make the perfect backdrop for our movie. Detroit and the entire state of Michigan have been fantastic collaborators, and we are looking forward to working together on this film.”
The untitled feature was awarded an incentive of $35m on $131m of projected in-state expenditures.
The choice to shoot in the US has come as a surprise to many onlookers as Men of Steel - the previous Superman film - was shot in Vancouver, Canada, and according to earlier reports Toronto was in the running as a location for the current sequel.
And the location is not the first surprise of this production - earlier this week the studio revealed that Ben Affleck will be taking on the role of Batman, starring opposite Henry Cavill who will wear the blue and red Superman outfit. Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston is rumoured to take on the role of Lex Luthor.
In the upcoming film Superman and Batman will be joining each other on the big screen for the first time. Snyder is co-writing the story with David S. Goyer, who is writing the screenplay. Charles Roven and Deborah Snyder are producing the film, which will also star Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane.
“This project will further strengthen the reputation of Michigan and metro Detroit as a premier film destination,” said Margaret O’Riley, director of the Michigan Film Office. “We look forward to the spotlight shining on our incredibly talented workforce and the businesses that support our film industry here in Michigan.”
The production is expected to hire 406 Michigan workers, with a full time equivalent of 426 jobs, plus an additional 6,000 man/days of extra work. On top of this, approximately 500 local Michigan vendors will be used during the course of production and a $5.1m spend is allocated to cover the costs of hotels. An additional $3.5m is expected to go to out-of-town cast and crew per diem payments that will be spent in the local economy but which fall outside of the incentive programme.
