FOX International Channels (FIC), the home of The Walking Dead, and Keshet International have announced that they will be working with writer and feature director Peter Landesman to adapt Israeli series Shkufim (False Flag) for the international market.
The new project follows the success of Keshet International’s Emmy Award winning Homeland which was adapted from the Israeli series Prisioners of War.
Created by Amit Cohen–Raab (who will co-write the US adaption) and Maria Feldman, and produced by Tender productions, the series is inspired by the 2010 assassination of Palestinian radical Mahmoud Al-Mabhouh in his hotel room in Dubai.
Fraudulent passports and false identities of 26 international citizens were used in the assassination sparking a worldwide diplomatic scandal. Landesman’s adaption will follow the story of eight seemingly ordinary American citizens who wake up to find their identities broadcast across the world as suspects of a brazen international crime.
“The espionage thriller is a genre we all know, love and are excited to take to a level we hope audiences will not have experienced before,” said Landesman. The director will be making his debut in television, following the opening of his feature film Parkland this weekend. Parkland follows the JFK assassination, as seen through the experiences of some its intimate, and mostly unknown participants.
“Peter with his background in investigative journalism understands the complexity of the story and has come up with a version that will connect deeply with audiences both in the US and globally,” said FIC’s executive vice president of original development and scripted programming, Sharon Tal Yguado.
The project is a further example of FIC’s project of further developing character driven dramas in the US that can be translated into global franchises via a global day and date release strategy, pioneered with hit series the Walking Dead.
Keshet international has a number of other high-profile shows in development in the US, including M.I.C.E, a drama from Peter Berg and Sarah Aubrey’s Film 44 based on Israeli series Gordin Cell. The company is also making strides globally having announced ventures in Australia and Canada earlier this year.
