British actor Tom Hardy will take the role of iconic singer/songwriter Elton John in Rocketman, a forthcoming biopic about the flamboyant musician’s life.

Focus Features’ incoming CEO Peter Schlessel made the casting announcement as it was confirmed that the US powerhouse has boarded the project. The film comes from Rocket Pictures, the UK-based production shingle run by Elton John, David Furnish and Steve Hamilton Shaw.

Hamilton Shaw said of the hire: “Tom is a stellar talent who will add extraordinary depth and nuance in bringing Elton’s story to life. We are excited to have such a gifted actor on board.”
